HISTORY OF THE STUD
Having been interested in ponies since I was 7 years old, then training to be a riding instructress and eventing at National level, it was not untill I was expecting by son in 1970 that I discovered Welsh Mountain Ponies. Having visions of being a perfectly dressed lead rein Mum I went out in search of a suitable pony and found Coed Coch Erywdd in a field of about 30 ponies. She was in foal and had a lovely colt foal, both were winners when shown in hand. Although my son was never interested in riding, I was hooked by the beautiful ponies and went on to purchase several Coed Coch bred mares. At the 1978 Weston Stud sale I was lucky enough to buy Weston Bestman for a then record 1,200 gns for a colt foal at auction. He was worth every penny and bred the stud many Champions in-hand and under saddle. The next stallion was Moorcock Bracken, a prolific winner in-hand when shown for us in young stock classes by Len Bigley. He was again a sire of lovely stock and was eventually sold to Holland where he was equally successful. Luckily for us Pendock Legend stood in our area and he was particularly successful on our mares. Colne Trisca being Res. Champ at HOYS under sadle and now a brood mare and Colne Tatiana a Royal Welsh winner. Finally we have Nantdywyll Telor who has produced fabulous foals in his first two crops at Colne. One of the highlights were winning RWAS and Glyn Greenwood Championship with Colne Tatiana and watching Colne Hieress (Sec.B by Orielton Aristocrat) win 2 Championships under saddle at HOYS plus the Welsh Centenary Supreme Championship there. Heiress was retired in 2006 and had a presentation in the main arena at HOYS to mark her achievements, a very fitting climax to her career. Ann Overton-Ablitt |
